The History of Morkie

The morkie (or as some call it: "Yorkie") is a dog that does not have official recognition by cynological associations worldwide. These institutions aim to determine what are the aspects that must be continuously repeated in each of the races in order to preserve the essence of it.

The morkie not belonging to the lists of these institutions does not have an official standard, which could slightly affect their descriptions since the breeders of this new breed can easily enter into controversy due to disagreements regarding the characteristics of the coat, spots, size or similar to one of the two races from which it comes.

The main problem that does not allow hybrid breeds to “take off” in terms of popularity and number is that they are not breeds that have a marked genetic pattern, that is, it cannot be known for sure if combining a Yorkshire terrier and a Maltese bichon The result will be a puppy with exact characteristics that you saw in a magazine, photo or on the internet.

This happens because they are new crosses. The first specimens began breeding just a decade ago by independent breeders or families who really loved these little dogs.

From that moment on, if they were of one size or another, they had the type of fur from Yorkshire or Maltese, they had a suspicious temperament with strangers like Maltese, or they were of size it was a matter of luck (or bad luck if the result was not known). I expected).

Normally it would take a few decades and exhaustive processes of breeding only specimens that have certain physical and behavioral characteristics for this breed to finally be recognized by international cynological associations, the problem is that the clubs agree on specific standards for carrying out this action together.

The standards that all morkie breeders currently consider are:
  • That measure less than 30 cm high at the shoulders.
  • They weigh between 2.5 and 5 kg.
  • That it has an abundant and showy coat.
As you will see, it is not a demanding standard due to the difficulties of establishing one unofficially.

The morkie has become popular despite this problem because it is a very beautiful dog, it has physical and behavioral characteristics from its parents, the Maltese and the Yorkshire, so it is a dog used to living with family and obeying their owner while being fervently faithful to him.

However, many families wonder if opting for a hybrid or "designer" dog is a good idea due to the aforementioned drawbacks, which makes them opt for a more traditional option such as choosing one of the morkie's parents. as a pet or to another dog that is a very good pet like the poodle.

Without a doubt, the morkie is a new breed that promises a lot and that shares a lot of similarity with the also new breed  Maltipoo. The more people who acquire a dog of this breed and decide to breed it in their homes under a specific standard, the more likely it is that it will be accepted under a standard and its puppy behavior faithful to its master and sweetness will reach many more people...
